Game Recap

At Maple Mountain on Thursday, the Wasps lost 2-3. In a game that had Region 8 Championship implications, Wasatch came up just short to finish in third place.

Maple Mountain scored in the 5th minute of the first half and the 5th minute of the second half. Each half though, Wasatch had the early opportunity to score but could not get the ball in the net. Good possession right from the start had Wasatch taking a couple of early shots but it was the counter attack that proved successful for Maple Mountain with Dawson Beutler scoring. Wasatch possessed the ball a bit more than Maple Mountain the rest of the half and had seven shots on goal to two by the Golden Eagles.

The second half started out with an immediate opportunity on goal as Dax Holmes headed the ball to Harrison Cheal. Harrison dribbled to the end line on the left side, beating two opponents and sent a beautiful ball across the mouth of the goal but Wasatch could not get a foot on it to tuck it away. Once again on a counter, Beutler scored in the 45 minute to put Maple on top 2-0. Wasatch continued to battle back all second half and finally after multiple attempts their aggression paid off with a penalty kick. Dax Holmes beat a defender in the penalty box and was tripped up while attempting a shot. The resulting penalty kick was taken by Carlos Vargas who tucked the ball in the left side of the goal.

Now down only 2-1 the Wasps continued to put pressure on the Golden Eagles’ defense with multiple opportunities on goal. In the 36th minute, another counter attack resulted in a goal by Hunter Jacobson. Instead of giving up, Wasatch kept up the pressure which resulted in another goal in the 38th minute. Dax Holmes had a long throw that went right in the mix of players in front of the goalkeeper. The confusion of who would get the ball caused the goalkeeper to misplay the ball and it went right through his hands for the goal.

Once again Wasatch had one last chance for the tying goal but came up short with a shot going just wide. The goalkeeper from Maple Mountain was kept busy all day long.

Wasatch finished with a Region 8 record of 9-3 for a third place finish behind Maple Mountain and Uintah. Their first round inter-region game will be in Brigham City on Wednesday, May 17 against a good Box Elder team from Region 5.
