Wasatch High School Rugby Mission:

The mission of WHS Rugby is to develop, promote, and foster an environment in which participation in the sport of Rugby is encouraged and enhances the life experiences of the youth athletes and families we serve for all those with an interest to play at the high school and youth levels regardless of race, religion, gender and socioeconomic status.

 WHS Rugby:

At WHS Rugby we strive to:

  • Be the epicenter of rugby in Utah.
  • Establish goals for youth and high school athletic activities related to the sport of rugby and encourage the attainment of those goals.
  • Coordinate and develop athletic activity in Wasatch County directly relating to the sport of rugby for non-traditional athletes or as an athletic alternative to more traditional sports.
  • Exercise exclusive participation and representation as WHS Rugby in the sport of rugby in the state rugby community, in league play, state championships, and other competitions.
  • Participate, promote and encourage physical fitness and public participation in rugby in Wasatch School District.

WHS Rugby 2015 Highlights

Wasatch High School Rugby has just completed a VERY successful 2nd season!  Here is a list of highlights of the program’s accomplishments:

  • DII State Championships — Boy’s Varsity and the Lady Wasps take Division II Titles
  • Developed the first Lady Wasps Rugby Girls’ Team. They were Division II state champions
  • 11 All-Conference Players (6 boys and 5 girls)
  • All-State Boys 9/10: Jake Weenig
  • 2 All-State Ladies: Sutton Epling, Ana Perez,
  • WHS sent players Ana Perez, Sutton Epling, and Jake Weenig to play for the Utah All-State teams and WHS head coach Patrick Whalen to coach the Utah Boys Varsity Team in the National High School All State Championships in Denver CO in June. Utah took the national title for Varsity Boys, 9/10 Boys, and took second with Girls Varsity.  Jake Weenig also represented Utah all stars in the Vancouver sevens tournament in July.
  • Wasatch Rugby was recognized as a “Letterman Sport” this year through the WHS athletic department. Both boys and girls varsity team players received “Varsity Letters”
  • Multiple players accepted to attend and to play for the: University of Utah, Utah State University, Oklahoma State University, Utah Valley University, and the U.S. Air Force. Players also interviewed with Stanford and Boise State
  • Development of 7th and 8th grade Flag rugby – we had for the first time 7/8 grade kids playing flag rugby in PE classes at Timpanogos Middle School.
  • WHS Rugby was asked to participate in the Utah Youth Rugby varsity boys and girls 7’s series this fall – Boys finished with a Division 2 7s title for the series
