Meet Recap

The Wasatch Wrestling team traveled to Rochester MN. this past weekend to participate in the 15th Edition of The Clash: National High School Wrestling Duals. This tournament is a invitation only tournament. This year the tournament featured three teams ranked within the top five nationally: No. 2 Buchanan (Calif.), No. 3 St. Edward (Ohio), and No. 4 Lake Highland Prep (Fla.). Six additional teams that are nationally ranked competed in the 32-team event . Those teams were No. 21 Oak Park River Forest (Ill.), No. 24 Park Hill (Mo.), No. 26 Washington (Ill.), No. 37 Roseburg (Ore.), and No. 50 Anoka (Minn.)
Friday started will each team in a 8 team bracket. Wasatch was seeded third in their bracket. Wasatch started the tournament with 40-21 win over Corona Del Sol AZ.. Next Wasatch defeated nationally ranked No. 26 Washington ILL. 28-27. The win put Wasatch into the Bracket C Championship against nationally ranked No. 4 Lake Highland Prep FL. Lake Highland Prep prevailed 52-18. Wasatch’s 2-1 pool record put them into the afternoon session on Saturday in Division #2.
Saturday stared with 43-17 lost to Apple Valley MN. Wasatch then wrestled nationally ranked No. 50 Anoka MN. Anoka defeated Wasatch 45-24. The last match of the tournament saw Wasatch wrestle nationally ranked No. 21 Oak Park River Forrest ILL. This would be Wasatch’s closest match of the day losing 38-32. Wasatch ended up placing 8th out of the 32 team field. The team wrestled tough against these national ranked teams, and came home with a determination to work hard and improve on some of their technique. Top individual performers for the team were Stockton O’Brien (126lbs) 4-2, Zak Kohler (132lbs) 3-3, Steven Ballif (138lbs) 4-2, Corbin Smith (145lbs), Seth Gardner (170lbs) 4-2, Ritchie Heywood (182lbs) 5-1 and DJ Cohen (195lbs) 5-1.

Wasatch has 7 wrestlers participating in the 17th Annual All-Star Dual at UVU tonight. Trevor Cluff (120), Zak Kohler (132), Steven Ballif (138), Corbin Smith (145), Ritchie Heywood (182) and DJ Cohen (195) will represent the Wasps. Jakob Discher (160) was to be in one of the featured matches but will not be able to participate due to an injury he suffered at The Clash.

Wasatch will then travel to Salem Hills this Thursday fro a region dual versus the Skyhawks.
