Coed Junior Varsity Cross Country, Coed Varsity Cross Country · Wasatch XCtry already in action

Last Thursday the Wasatch high school cross country team had their first meet of the year in Salt Lake city at the Highland invitational.  This yearly meet is held at the same site as the state course, and is one of the largest cross country meets each year.  Over 2300 student-athletes participated in the race last week, and Wasatch high athletes were a part of the action.

Due to the large number of participants, 8 different races were held to accommodate the need to race all freshman, sophomores, JV runners, and varsity runners.  These groups were divided up into boys and girls races, and full results can be found at—including  racers names, full 3-mile run times, split times for each mile from each race, and overall team results.

This year, over 60 runners competed from Wasatch high school—many of them returning from last year.  Varsity runners on the boys side include Jake Ellis (Sr), Kyle Weldon (Sr), Andrei Hinkley (Sr), Josh Horner (So), Mathias Dunn (Jr), Bentley Akerson (So), and Connor Baird (Sr).  Out of 32 schools that participated in the varsity race, Wasatch respectably placed 14th overall, and was able to see some of the competition they anticipate in Region and for the State meet later in the year.  Highlights from the 2.9 mile course include team best times from Jake Ellis (15:56), Kyle Weldon (16:13), Andrei Hinckley (16:56), Josh Horner (16:59), Mathias Dunn (17:18), Bentley Ackerson (17:33), and Connor Baird (18:18).  Another top time from the JV race included Mason Heimburger (17:09).

On the girl’s side, Wasatch High school placed 13th out of 30 participating teams, and was led by senior runner, Abby West.  Abby placed second overall at the meet with a stellar time of 17:37 on the 2.9-mile course, and was assisted in the team score by Amy Richardson (Sr, 19:42), Anna Baird (So, 20:22), Abbie Randall (Fr, 20:50), Hailey Ellis (So, 20:50), Madelyn King (So, 21:18), and Savanna Dorrough (Fr, 32:48).  This group of young runners has trained hard, and is posed to do well in Region competition with strong senior leadership paired with talented young runners.

To that end, there were numerous other participants in last week’s race, and we encourage you to look up the full results of each race on, or check the Wasatch cross-country Facebook page for team activities and race results.  Additionally, to see the team in action in the coming weeks, the team races next weekend at SUU, and will begin region competition on Tuesday, Aug 29th at Timpanogos High school.  Our home meet, held at Soldier Hollow, will take place on the morning of September 9th.  Hope to see you there!
