Game Recap

A must win for Wasatch to have a chance to qualify for the state tournament turned into a nail biting, competitive, drama filled game at Bulldog Stadium in Provo. Wasatch controlled the offensive opportunities but found it tough to break down eight and nine players packing in the defensive third of the field for Provo. Three or four great opportunities were thwarted by a swarm of defenders and an excellent goalkeeper. The first half ended with the score 0-0.

The second half began like the first but this time Myia Hoggan scored in the 47th minute with a beautiful long shot in the upper left V of the net from a great assist by Mickey Scovil. The Wasps looked much crisper with passing and opportunities as getting used to the turf helped.

The Provo Bulldogs did not lie down and give up. They re-energized themselves and came back strong and physical. The play in the second half was very physical as both teams were fighting for the must win. Wasatch was called for eleven fouls, many in the second half while Provo responded with ten fouls of their own, many in the second half.
Provo would not back down.

Even though Wasatch controlled the game, Provo did have a couple of dangerous counter attacks on goal. With about ten minutes left, a Wasatch defender hooked the foot of the Provo forward and the Bulldogs were awarded a penalty kick. Surely it looked like the game would be tied.

As the player approached the ball, Hannah Johnston made the decision to stay in the middle of the net and was able to make the save from the penalty kick. Euphoria erupted from the Wasp bench as the win would surely be preserved.

It just set the tone for more excitement. The game really turned more physical and both teams had several yellow cards administered. With five minutes left a Provo player was issued a ‘red’ card and they were forced to finish with only nine field players and the GK.

It was a great, needed win.
