XC Stellar this Week as they Head in to Region Championships…
A personal record in Cross Country is pretty difficult to obtain year-to-year. For example, a senior on the team who runs their best time ever during their Jr. year may not hit that time again on a course until well in to their Senior season. Head Coach Shauna Bowden tracks all of these times meticulously, and can tell her athletes at any time what their personal best times are. Some athletes will hit their Personal Record early on and never again attain it, but at Wasatch High School, our kids are expected to improve every year—and Coach Bowden makes sure that happens. In fact, at our most recent meet over %90 of the participants on the team who raced last Friday hit their personal best mark of the year, and many of the younger athletes hit their personal best time of their lives!
“Coach Bowden has been pushing us hard with her workouts!” Notes team captain, Abby West. “And I really think it’s paying off. We’re all getting down to the times we want to be at and I’m excited to see how we all do at Region and State.”
“She knows how to get us to where we need to be, that’s for sure.” Adds Jake Ellis—one of the team captains on the boys’ side. “Sometimes we really don’t want to do those tough workouts, but we know how important they are for improving our times—so, we suck it up and stick to it!”
Assistant coach, Brad Foster thinks that the workouts that Coach Bowden puts together are precisely what is working to get the kids where they need to be right now. “Motivation is easy once you finally see your times come down, but putting the work in is the tough thing throughout the season. Early mornings, hot days, long hours in the sun—it isn’t very fun,” says Foster, “However, when you can look at that time by your name in the results and see that it is faster than you have ever run before… there really isn’t a better feeling than that very moment, and any of these kids can tell you that!”
Coaches Bowden, Foster, Sheehan and Miyazawa were all beaming Friday as they saw the large majority of their kids with similar smiles on their faces because of their individual performances. Full results are online under “Nebo Invitational” on runercard.com, including splits for each mile run, and overall team results for each team that ran. However, some of the highlights include Abby West and her personal record time of 18:17 for the year—Abby placed 15th overall and is expected to do well this week at Park City. Jake Ellis also placed in the top 20—taking the 19th spot overall with a stellar time of 15:56.
This week the team races at Park City—the last chance to see them before the Region Championships on Friday, October 6th at Scera Park in Orem.
