Wasatch High School Girls Volleyball scored their biggest victory of the season by outlasting #1 Region 8, and the State #5 ranked Skyridge Falcons in Heber City on Tuesday, October 10th in 5 games. The match went back and forth with each team trading wins and leading to a tight game 5, where the Wasps served for match point and won 15-13 with an ace by Junior Jen Lythgoe.
WHS was lead by Junior Tori Dorius who had 18 kills, 3 blocks and 2 aces. Also playing well for the Wasps were Brynli Buehler who had 9 kills and 4 blocks, and Sidney Ostergaard with 8 kills and 9 digs. Lythgoe had season highs 39 assists, 3 blocks and 8 aces to go along with her 11 digs. Senior Libero Shelby Huntington had 12 digs, Senior middle Lacey Kelsch had 4 kills and 4 blocks and Bret Lloyd had 3 kills and 10 digs.
“It was a total team contribution.” mentioned head coach Brent Martindale. “An engine with all parts working together, about the best we’ve done this season. We’re peaking at a very good time.”
Martindale praised Dorius as a leader with a big night of stats, but also said key kills and digs by Ostergaard in game 5, and Buehler with big hits and blocks all night, stood out as helping with the win. “And Jen ran the team as a true leader.” said Martindale about junior setter Lythgoe.
The win over Skyridge helps the Wasps in trying to take over the second seed–or even possibly the 1st seed–as the state tournament approaches on November 3-4 at Utah Valley University. With 3 matches left, Wasatch needs to win out to hope for the better seed.
Next up is a re-match at Springville, with WHS looking to avenge a bitter loss to the #2 Devils in 3 games at home back in September. “We are really looking forward to playing them again. We didn’t play well last time and it’s left a bitter taste in our mouths.” said coach Martindale. The match at Springville has been moved from the Thursday, Oct. 12th original date to Friday, October 13th to accommodate the modified football schedules the week before Fall Break.
The last home match, and Senior Night for Wasatch will be next Tuesday, October 17th in the Nest. Sophomores begin at 3:30pm, JV and Freshmen at 4:45pm and Varisty at 6:00pm.
