Wasatch Lacrosse Girls Fall to Pleasant Grove in Season Opener
The Wasatch Girls Lacrosse team opened their season against Pleasant Grove on Wednesday March 7. Pleasant Grove’s seasoned varsity team took home the win against Wasatch 12-4. This year, Wasatch’s roster has had a bit of an overhaul with at least 10 new freshmen and are welcoming their new coach, Ashley Painter.
Last Wednesday’s game started off in Pleasant Grove’s favor with their control of the draw and a fast break resulting in a score for them within the first minute. Pleasant Grove scored the next point before Brisa Clayton answered back, four minutes into the game, and scoring Wasatch’s first goal of the season. The first half continued to go to Pleasant Grove as they scored 7 more goals in a row.
After a rough first half, Wasatch came back for the second half fighting. The score was 9-1 at the end of the first half, but Wasatch came in with determination and Team Captain Shelby Parker scored first for both teams in the second half. Pleasant Grove came back with two uninterrupted goals before Wasatch could slow them down. The other Team Captain, Lucy Colton scored for Wasatch and then Pleasant Grove scored before freshman Sara Livingstone scored the last goal of the game. Overall in the second half, Wasatch was able to step up their defense and slow Pleasant Grove down, matching their goals three for three.
This game was a trial by fire, whereas half the team were playing their first high school level game, but the second half shows that the team can have some real potential. Once the team can shake their opening game jitters and pull together to teach and mentor the incoming girls, we should expect some very exciting games in their future.
