Wasatch Waterpolo Teams Dominate Tournament
Wasatch Waterpolo Boys and Girls teams recently swept through their divisions undefeated, to win the inaugural Wasatch Wahoo! Waterpolo Tournament. The Varsity-level games took place on Friday and Saturday, March 16-17th at the Wasatch Aquatic Center, and featured teams from Cache Valley, Bear River, Weber, and Delta.
While most of the Boys got in to the scoring action, it was their defense that drown their opponents. Goalie Brigham Cliften was the anchor with well over 100 blocks during the tournament, but a new defensive attitude was evident as they repeatedly stole passes and shut down everyone’s 2-meter offense attack.
The Girls emphasized offense, and while Senior Anna Durrans and Junior Olivia Wabel led the scoring, they really worked on setting up a perimeter offense and getting the ball to some of the newer players. Several players scored their first goals ever – a real boost to their confidence.
Head Coach Rob Durrans was extremely pleased with the teams’ performance. “The kids have improved so much over the last 4 weeks. They have worked hard under the new coaching staff, and this weekend were able to reap the benefits of all that work.” Boys Coach, Glen Hodge, a California transplant has brought a new level of intensity and style of aggressive play to the team. With only a couple Seniors on the team, he is building a program with a solid future, which is already seeing success.
Gabby Churcher, Head Girls Coach, has years of playing and coaching experience as well, and is thrilled to have added 10 new players this year to a solid core of 9 returners. Both the Boys and the Girls boast Varsity and Junior Varsity teams, and this summer they will be offering a Splash Ball introductory program at the pool for any who are interested in learning the sport.
Next home games are this Thursday, when powerhouse Springville comes to town, and then the JV teams head to Delta for a tournament on Friday and Saturday.
