Coed Varsity Track · Track does well at 5A State Championships

The WHS Track team sent 11 athletes to the 2019 UHSAA State Championships this past Thursday and Saturday. The girls team earned a total of 27 points placing 12th out of 22 scoring teams. The boys team earned 11 points placing 18th out of 24 scoring teams.

The meet started Thursday morning with Abbie Randall running the 3200m. Abbie placed 14th overall with a time of 11:39.98.

After the 3200m, the trials for the sprints started with the girls 100m hurdles. Top 9 times advance to the finals which were held on Saturday. Annie Hill had a great start and finished with a 1st place seed time of 15.29 and Ellie Martindale raced to a 13th place finish running a time of 17.08.

Connely Hill placed 11th overall in the 110m Hurdles, running a 16.83. A personal best.

In the 400m, both Sydney Hales and Mack Hinckley ran great races, and each earned a spot in the finals. Sydney placed 8th with a time of 59.75 and Mack placed 7th with a 50.59.

Kellin Olsen won his heat of the 800m with a time of 1:57.86 which placed him 8th overall.

The final running event on Thursday was the sprint medleys. The girl’s team, which consisted of Jennifer Lythgoe, Lucy Clawson, Sidney Hales and Anna Baird, ran a season best time of 4:22.49. This time placed them 10th out of 19 teams. The boy’s team consisting of Peter Meuzelaar, Sam Lemon, Mack Hinckley and Bentley Ackerson also ran a season best time of 3:43.09 placing 9th out of 17 teams.

WHS also had several athletes represented in the field events. These events also took place on Thursday. Freshman, Lexi Vernsey cleared 4-11 in the High Jump earning 2nd place overall.

Jay Nelson threw her personal best in the Shot Put, earning 6th place overall with a throw of 45-00.50.

In the Girl’s Javelin, Quincy Olney throwing a personal best 104-6.75 earned 6th place overall with Ellie Tuddenham throwing 82-6.50 earning 16th place,

Saturday morning started with Abbie Randall running in the 1600m. Abbie finished 13th overall with a time of 5:23.18.

Annie Hill, who had a 1st place seed from the trials was out-leaned across the finish line in the 100m Hurdles final and lost the State Championship title by .01 second. She ended up second with a time of 15.43.

Sydney Hales was up next in the 400m. She ran a season best time of 59.19, placing her 7th overall.

Mack Hinckley also ran in the 400m finals event. Mack ran a personal best of 50.48, giving him 4th place overall.

The 4×400 was the final event at the State Championships. The girls team ran by Sidney Price, Jennifer Lythgoe, Miranda Ross & Sydney Hales ran an excellent race with a time of 4:02.24. A season best and a 3rd place finish overall.

The boys 4×400 team also ran a season best. The team consisted of Bentley Ackerson, Josh Benson, Kellin Olsen and Mack Hinckley. They ran a 3:27.21 placing 7th overall.
