Game Recap

Another exciting game with Wasatch and Uintah. It was like the old Region 10 days when this rivalry always had exciting games in Vernal. This year’s Uintah Utes have a senior laden team that have been together since they were young kids. They are extremely good at home and on the road.

Despite Wasatch controlling the play for the first ten minutes, having several really good opportunities on goal, Uintah really picked up the pace of the game with three goals in twelve minutes. The first was at the 12th minute mark, Caden Nerdin, the Uintah coach’s son, slotted away a nice shot. In the 19th minute, Franli Rivera made an unbelievable shot that seemed to squeeze between the Wasatch goalie and the near post. It was such a narrow window but just wide enough. The third goal of the half was in the 24th minute by Junior Flores, again just getting past the defense.

At halftime, a spirited discussion with the coaching staff and players, seemed to lift up the spirits of the Wasatch team. A couple of tactical adjustments, particularly pushing the ball up top quickly to put pressure on the Utes defense, worked with two goals in the first six minutes of the second half. Wasatch had Uintah on their heels quickly into the half. Jesse Lopez had a great assist from his twin, Gary, and then Gary Lopez scored from a great long throw by Dax Holmes. The two quick goals woke up Uintah in a hurry and the rest of the game was a flurry of activity.

Wasatch had several opportunities to tie up the score but just couldn’t quite get the equalizer. Uintah began to tighten up their defense and not counter attack Wasatch like they had in the first half. This limited the Wasps in what they were doing. Still though, Wasatch kept the pressure on the entire second half.

Time just ran out for a come back. The coaching staff was extremely proud of the team for not giving up and coming back with renewed energy that almost paid off.

The Region 8 race is now really tight. Maple Mtn is 7-1 with both Wasatch and Uintah at 7-2.

Be sure to come out to senior night this Thursday in the football stadium at 6 PM for the varsity game against an improving Springville.

Game Recap

The Wasatch at Salem Hills soccer match started out with a bang. After 90 seconds the lightening struck and thunder rolled. The officials quickly called the game for an immediate lightening delay that lasted for 30 minutes. Before Wasatch could put things away for the delay, a micro burst of wind destroyed the large, protective canopy. It was not a good start for the Wasps.

When the match was resumed, both teams seemed to struggle getting much going. After 12 minutes Jesse Lopez entered and it seemed to inspire the Wasps. In a matter of twelve minutes Wasatch had scored four goals. It was a beautiful display of soccer. The ball was moving out wide and then swung quickly to the middle with the defense being spread out. During the first half the shots on goal were being put away in the net.

In the 18th minute Harrison Cheal put away the first goal from a great assist from Jesse.
In the 20th minute Jesse Lopez scored from a long assist from the back line, courtesy of Matthias Dunn. In the 25th minute Max Magana found an open Chandler Hendry for the third goal of the half. Then in the 28th minute Dax Holmes scored a long goal and the assist was Jesse’s second of the half. It was a fantastic display of unselfish soccer with great results.

The second half was a continuation of the first with opportunities but several of the shots just missed or hit the crossbar or hit the post. A wet, rainy, windy, day did not keep the Wasps from playing well and coming away with their Region 8 leading sixth victory.

Carson Broadhead played in goal the first half with Blake Skovsaard playing in the second. Each was credited with half a shut out.

Game Recap

The first half was a competitive game with Maple Mountain and Wasatch both having good opportunities to score. Wasatch took eleven shots, four of which were on goal. The Maple Mountain goalkeeper had a great first half. Too many of the shots were longer, though on target. Maple Mountain had four shots, two on goal.

The defensive battle of the first half was quickly overshadowed by two quick goals early in the second half by Maple Mountain. Tommy Bastian beat the defense and slotted away the first goal. Just several minutes later, Angel Menendez scored the first of his two goals.

The usual offensive display of Wasatch was disrupted by a swarming Maple Mtn. defense that began packing it in after the early second half two goal lead. Wasatch was unable to move the ball to the outside and attack the seams.

Hunter Nielsen, goalkeeper of Maple Mtn. had an outstanding game. Wasatch ended with 19 shots, nine of which were on goal. Maple Mountain had nine shots, five on goal that resulted in three goals.

The first half of Region 8 play ended today with Uintah, Maple Mountain, and Wasatch tied up top with records of 5 wins and 1 loss.

The second half of region play begins on Thursday with the Wasps at Salem Hills, 4PM.
