The Wasatch Boy’s Soccer team played their firs game of the season against 6A Kearns High School and beat them in a shoot out.
Kearns came out in the first 10 minutes with a lot of energy. They scored right around the 8th minute. The boys kept their composure and started to control the game. The defense and midfield composed themselves and started to control the ball. Wasatch started to have many opportunities to score. Right around the 30th minute Wasatch’s offensive pressure earned them a corner kick. Lenny Gomez put the ball across the net and Greyson Mercer headed the ball into the back of the net to tie the game heading into halftime.
Wasatch came out with energy in the second half dominated possession. Earning another corner. Jack Jarrett put the ball over the top and Andrew Cates put in a second header. Wasatch was in the lead and controlled the game.
In the second half Wasatch’s defense stepped up and didn’t allow a shot until the final 5 minutes of the game. Kearns took the ball around the defense and scored to tie the game.
This year in boy’s soccer teams cannot end in a tie due to the RPI ranking system. So the game headed into overtime. Wasatch again had many close chances but couldn’t put the ball in the net. The game went into a shootout.
Wasatch went first and Greyson Mercer put the ball in the corner of the net. Kearns scored their to make it 1-1. Edgar Garcia placed his shot right inside the post. Kearns scored their shot making it 2-2. Jack Jarret stepped up and put his shot low and right under the goalie. Kearns captain stepped up and put his shot left of Wasatch’s goalie Elder Gutierrez Ruiz. Elder dove to his left pushing the ball around the post for the save putting Wasatch in the lead 3-2. Damian Martinez stepped up and buried his shot in the back of the net making the lead 4-2. Kearn’s had to make the next shot in order to keep the shootout going, their player stepped up and put the ball to Elder’s right side. Elder dove to his right and made a second save securing the win.d
“Wasatch played a good game,” said Coach Hendry, “we lost a lot of seniors last year but have a lot of experience this year. We are young but very talented.”
The boys will be getting ready for their game against Timpiew next Tues at Wasatch’s Wright-Tree stadium. Come and support Wasatch, game starts at 4:00.
